Sod gives you an instant lawn — but a successful sod installation requires proper soil preparation, the right variety for North Alabama, and diligent watering during establishment. Here's what you need to know.
Choosing the Right Grass
For most North Alabama lawns, you have a few main options:
Bermuda Grass: The most popular choice. Excellent heat and drought tolerance, fast recovery, and low maintenance once established. Goes dormant and brown in winter.
Zoysia Grass: Denser and softer than Bermuda, with better shade tolerance. Slower to establish but very durable once it does. Also goes dormant in winter.
St. Augustine: Best shade tolerance of the warm-season options. Popular in shadier yards but less cold-hardy than Bermuda or Zoysia.
Soil Preparation is Everything
Don't skip this step. Sod laid on hard, compacted, or poorly graded soil will struggle. Proper prep includes:
- Soil test to identify deficiencies
- Add amendments as needed (lime to raise pH, sulfur to lower it)
- Grade to ensure proper drainage away from structures
- Rototill 4–6 inches
- Firm the soil before laying sod
Watering After Installation
The first two weeks are critical. Newly installed sod needs daily watering (sometimes twice daily in summer heat) until the roots establish. You'll know it's establishing when you can no longer easily lift a corner of the sod.
After the first two weeks, water deeply but less frequently to encourage deep root growth.
When to Install
In North Alabama, the ideal windows for warm-season sod installation are April–May (spring) and September (early fall). Avoid installing in the peak of summer heat if you can help it — the establishment period is much more stressful for the grass.
